The Art of Reading Smoke, by Phil Jose

9:00 AM to 5:00 PM Saturday, October 18th

Through dynamic teaching and the use of fire-ground video, attendees will learn the skill of reading smoke. You will learn about the attributes of smoke including Volume, Velocity, Density, and Color. Explore how those attributes will indicate Fire Size, Fire Location, and Predict Fire Behavior. Your strategic and tactical decision-making will improve through this class. The course was originally developed by Chief Dave Dodson who selected Phil as an adjunct instructor for the Reading Smoke curriculum after teaching with Phil at FDIC.

9:00 AM to 5:00 PM Sunday, October 19th

Get better at making decisions under time and pressure through sets and reps experiencing experiences being first-in at multiple structure fires in multiple types of buildings. Students experience the pressure of first in tactical decisions and get to apply their understanding of building construction, fire behavior, and their agency resourcing to formulate and communicate an incident action plan. First-in video and a dynamic approach create a fast-paced class to burn through sets and reps of decisions at the tip of the spear. 

Registration fees:

District 13 member agency staff: $15/day or $25 both days

General registration: $60/day

Registration may be invoiced to your agency, or paid in cash at time of check-in.
